Scientist Alec Holland, with his wife and research partner Linda, were developing a bio-restorative formula -- which would promote radically improved growth in plants, turning deserts into gardens -- when their secluded laboratory in the swamps of Louisiana were invaded by representatives of a commercial interest who wished to use the formula for profit. Knocked unconscious and left in the lab with a bomb, Alec came to just before the explosion erupted. On fire and doused in his bio-restorative formula, he staggered out into the swamps, where a metamorphosis began.
Long thought to have been Alec Holland transformed by his formula into a muck-encrusted mockery of a man, the creature known as the Swamp Thing was, in fact, a plant elemental. Forged in fire, quenched in water, and patterned on Holland's memories, he is a being of the Earth itself, created to be one of its champions. He is connected to The Green -- the collective bio-electric field of all the Earth's plant life -- the Swamp Thing can project his consciousness through The Green into any plant life, exerting elemental control over its growth, structure, etc. In this manner, he can also traverse great distances by releasing his control over his existing body and forming a new one from the plant life available in his new locale.
The Swamp Thing has undergone many trials in the decades of his existence -- traversing the furthest reaches of space, the earliest days of Earth's existence, the spiritual realms, and many places in between -- but such things are in the past, and for the most part, the Swamp Thing is content to spend more of his time as representative of the Earth than as guardian, serene in his awareness of the interconnectedness of all life. (For those of you familiar with the comics, this means that as far as this Swmap Thing is concerned, the events of the third and fourth "Swamp Thing" series never happened.)
